If you want a modern spin on Greek & Roman mythology try reading The Lightning Thief and Sea Of Monsters by Rick Riordan. They are the first two book in a series about Perseus Jackson...who just recently learned that his father is Poseidon. Now he's gaining new powers, fighting some pretty big battles, and finding out that everything in his mythology class was true.

Hi,

This is kind of a long-shot, but there is a good biography about Sir Arthur Evans, discoverer of the Palace of Minos at Crete. It is very interesting as it ties into some very well known myths in which the Mycenaean Greeks were involved (you know, the labyrinth and the Minotaur?)

It also is interesting inasmuch as it heralded in a new era in archeology, as Sir Arthur Evans bridged the gap from Antiquarianism, wherein sites where pillaged, to modern archeology.

Additionally, it may interest you to learn that the Minoans were living in high culture with advanced art and flush toilets while the Mycenaean were running around clubbing each other and dragging their victims back to their caves.

Yet another interesting point is how the entire world waited on baited breath for announcements from the Evan's team at Crete and even the imagination of Erik Satie was stimulated enough by the reports to inspire his renowned Gnossienne (From Gnossos at Crete, right)

It is very interesting; and if you like ancient civilizations, it is a good read.

By the way, have you ever seen the movie Orfeo *****, or Black Orpheus? It is a really sweet rewrite of the myth of Orpheus and his great love, Eurydice. The music is by Antonio Carlos Jobim and is is set to Rio de Janeiro's carnival. It is an old film, but a must see if you haven't already.

Lots of characters from the Greek mythology in the following books.

A good series is the Dark Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon. The books provide an alternate take on vampires.People who are unjustly murdered call upon Artemis(Greek goddess) and she grants them a day to avenge themselves. After that they are recruited to her army to fight against evil. These are romance novels.Best of the series are 'Dance with the devil' and 'Seize the night'.

Werehunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon. The books in the series are Nightplay,Dragonswan,Stroke of midnight,Unleash the night. These are romance novels. You can read not only about were-wolves but also about were-dragons,were-panthers,wer... and were-tigers.The heros are handsome, powerful and with a mysterious past.Interesting reading. The best of the lot is Night play.

Mythology by Edith Hamilton is very good along with Bulfinch's Mythology. These two will get you started.

The Odyssey and The Iliad. They're the classics. Though they were written about 3000 years ago, give or take, the versions you'll find in English are not difficult to understand because they've been translated into somewhat, modern day English.

I don't know of one personally , but I do work for a couple from Greece. Their daughter speaks Greek so I will have her ask them and get back to you on Wednesday. That is my next work day.

Read "The firebrand" by Marion Zimmer Bradley, about the Trojan war, concentrating specifically on Cassandra's role. Also "Until we have faces" by C.S. Lewis (I think), about Psyche.
