Because they are attacked by Hezbollah based in Lebanon.

The reason is the Hezbollah' attacks by rockets of more than 1500, killing of 8 Israeli soldiers, and the kidnapping of two soldiers.

The Hezbollah have been operating out of southern Lebanon, with the tacit approval of the Lebanese government. This is obvious from the non-response from the government on the return of the two soldiers.

More than that, the Hezbollah has gained political power in the new government of Lebanon, and has the support of Iran and Syria.

When the Israeli acted, the Arab League protested against the bombings by the Israeli. Why is there the need to beg the question on the displacement of more than half million people, the devastation of properties and facilities, and more than a few hundred deaths?

This is no way to move forward from the status quo if the Hezbollah, Syria, Iran, and even Hamas go the current way for resolving conflict through more violence. So far few of them dare making an diplomatic attempt on peace. They are still talking of wiping out the Israeli, more attacks to goal of nowhere, and more words than concrete steps toward peace.

Incidentally, Sharon and Abbas in the previous Palestinian government was really close to the start of a peace process. Unfortunately Sharon did not forward it forward because of failed health.

There is no guarantee that the measured Israeli response to create a 20 kilometres buffer zone will keep Hezbollah out, but it definitely will bring some quiet for the present.

Good question, any Israelis care to answer. I could be wrong but, I think its a knee jerk reaction. "Using a Steam Hammer to crack a Sesame seed" is the analogy. I used to sympathise with the Israelis, that is a mistake I will never make again. The basic problem was caused by European racism in the 20th century. Palestine was used as a convenient dumping ground, a salve to the collective conscience. Over the last 60 years the Israelis have become like the fascists who tried to wipe out the Jews. They have the solution in their own hands, treat the Palestinians fairly. All the so called militant Islamic movements have sprung up as a defiant response to western attempts to gain hegemony in the area.

Ask yourself this, if some foreign army was to occupy your country, force thousands of your people out of their homes, bomb, kill and maim your children, destroy your home, and your countries infrastructure, all in the name of defending their own territory, are you just going to sit and take it? Then someone tries to defend you and your family against this outrage, and they are accused of being terrorists, not only that but their supporters are forced into camps where they are massacred by terrorist groups sympathetic towards your oppressors and invaders. How are you going to feel?

The kidnaping of the Israeli soldiers was an act of war. So is the continuing shelling of Israel by Hizbollah. If someone is waging war against you, eventually it becomes necessary to respond in kind. There are lots of innocent Lebanese folks who are being devastated by this (I know some), but there is not much they can do except stay out of the way, and if they want the war over sooner rather than later, help the Israelis dispose of Hizbollah.

I think that the real reason is the US. I think that the Hezbollah and everything else is linked to the US. They cause wars between countries so that they can retain their power. Just like those bullies in schools who cause fights between good friends. You know what I mean? When I am talking about US, I am not talking about the common people.

US made two mistakes already in the middle east since their war on terror:
1) Afghanistan and Iraq: Democracy promises gone with the wind
2) Iran: Made them a major power in the region by removing their nemesis (Saddam)
hmmmm what do we do?
oh i know i know: we declare an axis of evil...lets destroy it it...but how?
Hezbollah captures two Israeli sodiers...YESSSS...lets destroy the bad guys and give birth to anew Mid East!
12 days later they r 19 soldiers down...please!
