I agree with Mas S the Bush administration has a 'don't do as I do but do as I say' attitude.... it's very worrying that the U.S. is now the only superpower as they can bully whoever they want. And lets not forget that the U.S funded terrorism in these shores with the IRA.... pot calling the kettle black springs to mind

This is a fair question and deserves a fair answer, especially as the British were in control before Israel was created in1948.
In both cases minorities saw/see themselves as under threat and use violence as a means of getting political power. In Ireland both the Catholics and the Protestants see themselves as under threat. In the currrent middle east situation the Palestinians, the Israeliis and the Syrian backed militias in southern Lebanon all see themselves as under threat and all threaten in return. Especially as terror seems to work!
The reason the UK government did not bomb the Irish Republic was that they thought they could handle the situation through internal measures (security etc) both on mainland Britain and in Northern Ireland and by tempting violent people to change their ways by offering them rewards, (seats in government etc)
Israel doesn't really have that option.
Arabs in Israel already have certain political rights, though you could argue about this. The Palestinians have electoral rights and have voted in a party which has vowed to destroy Israel (not much chance of power sharing there then) and the only reason that the militias in the south of Lebanon are there at all is because the democratically elected government of Lebanon are utterly powerless to carry out their promise to the UN that they would disarm the militias, who threaten Lebanon more than Israel in practice.
What else can Israel do? Just sit back and take bombing by people who will not join in the democratic process? This was the situation in Northern Ireland a few years ago and we tempted the IRA leaders into Stormont, only to have that abused, though most bombs have stopped.
But Israel has no say in how Lebanon runs itself. Also in Lebanon there is a Christian community, which you might say is a bit like the protestants in Northern Ireland. Can't they help? Well the last time the Christians in Lebanon and Israel got together, to expell the PLO (Yasser Arafat's lot), there were some pretty unpleasant consequences (massacres of the PLO), so no one wants to go there.
No. Just as the USA had to stop backing terrorists in Northern Ireland, so Syria has to stop backing terrorists who attack Israel if we want violence on both sides to stop.
Until then, the USA will continue to fund Israel, which the UN long ago decided had the right to exist as a state, whatever your views on how they tackle their own security.

I guess we can all ignore the stupid answers. Don't worry guys, it is really not your fault that you have no brains!

Anyway, the answer is simple, the international community is defined by the US supremacy. The US is Israel's partner in crime. They rage about Iranian missiles being used by Hezbollah but Americans missiles being used by Israel are ok!

The only thing that makes sense really is that the US is the super power. The big bully. It doesn't matter what the world thinks.

The neo-conservatives are the true fundamentalists and terrorists in the world today!

England segregated the country, split communities, placed army bases all over the place, enforced curfews and are still there now to keep watch. We didn't bomb the IRA, but we've ruined Ireland.

If Britain had bombed Ireland there would have been more than outrage!! America was funding the IRA, the hypocritical gits that they are.

I do understand the question, and think it is a fair point...
Shame that others seem to be missing the point you are making.
Restraint from voilence is IMO indicative of good politics, and good politicians.... there is little around at the moment it seems...
Am not sure religion readily embraces politics, as politics is about compromise.

I see your point.

I guess the difference is there isnt a Jewish population mixed in the target area that might get hit. The Jewish response seems completely over the top. They might as well just declare war and have done with it.
