Why is a cat called a cat? In order to gain universal understanding of items we discuss, people name them. Who knows why? Remember though, that the word "dog" is only called a dog in English. There's thousands of other words that exist which convey the same meaning as "dog."

The origin of the English word dog derives from the Old English docga, a "powerful breed of canine". The French dogue and Spanish dogo as in dogo Argentino are borrowings from English.

The word 'dog' was first use sometime before 1010- it was commonly used to refer to a man (like slang) in literature etc. and oral conversation. It originated from Old English 'docga' - the male term for canine.
