True labour is contractions which start maybe 30 mins or so apart , gradually becoming closer together , stronger and lasting longer. The giveaway here is that the contractions are regular - as in, you can time them very accurately - every ten mins means every ten mins. Also your waters may break. Again another good indication you are in labour. Some signs before hand are diarrhoea and restlessness along with backache or period type pain. call the hospital when your contractions are 5 or 10 mins apart (depending on your pain threshold) or if your waters have broken (with or without contractions). Hope this helps.

Well I know one sign is your water breaking and when or if that happens contact your docter immediately, and she/he will tell you to go get checked at the hospital to be sure if that is what it was, then they will keep you because it is dangerous to have your waterbroken for more than 24 hours(cause infection) and you may not go in labor when that happens and may have to induce labor.

The absolute gold standard to know if your in true labor is to have ONE glass of wine. This will always make false labor stop. Real labor will continue and one glass of wine won't hurt you or the baby.

check you watch and the times when they become regular you know you are in labor, there will be a shorter time in between the closer you get and the contractions get stronger. Good Luck and Congratulations
