Has anyone read the book, "Earth Abides" by George R. Stewart? If so, what did you think? I thought it a fascinating read!
What about "The Children's Blizzard" by David Laskin? What a poignant and heart-rending tale that was! Opinions, please?

I have a copy of "Earth Abides" in my library, it's getting quite old but I loved the book I read it twice. I keep and large hammer in my garage where I can get it if I should ever need it. I nedd to get a newer copy so my daughter can read it to. You might like "The World According to Garp" by John Irving it's not on the same type of subject but a good read none the less. Or try some Fredric Brown short stories they're old, but great. There is "The Best of Fredric Brown".

I read Earth Abides many years ago. What distinguishes this book is the fact that the writer and the main character are Geographers, and the novel is basically an exploration of social phenomena and human nature.

Just a few days ago, it seems that I related the example of the "over-bred Pekingese" in their Manhattan apartment fretting over the availability of ice. Not so far from reality which is--after all--the mark of good science fiction.

While Stewart was not a great writer by any measure, his novel was, as you say, a fascinating read. In Spanish there is an expression which says:

Don't do bad things which appear good.

This was a point I was much in need of learning and which this book brought home to me. After seeing the wisdom of Stewart's vision of human nature, I was able to lower my own expectations and avoid making myself and everyone else miserable.

Now that we are on the verge of a post-literate age, it may well be time to re-read the book. Hurry before it is too late!

I've never read The Children's Blizzard, but I've read Earth Abides several times. It's one of those books that keeps you turning the pages and really pulls you into the story. I loved it!

Reading the e book instead of observing the movie is the best way to see what the writer intended. Reading uses your thoughts, hones your reading skills, and can make your vocabulary
