Ta Mok, also known as "Brother Number Four", was the nom de guerre of Chhit Choeun (c. 1926 – 21 July 2006), a senior figure in the leadership of the Khmer Rouge. He is belived to be born in a prosperous country family from the province from Takeo. He was an early follower of the Communist Party built up by Pol Pot, and took the nom de guerre Ta Mok, meaning Grandfather Mok. He was the military leader of Cambodia's brutal Khmer Rouge regime. He became a Buddhist monk in the 1930s but left the monkhood when he was 16.[1] He was part of the resistance against French colonial rule and then the anti-Japanese resistance in the 1940s. But he was training for the Buddhist priesthood at Pali when he joined the anti-French Khmer Issarak in 1964. He soon left Phnom Penh and fell in with the Khmer Rouge.
