I think silence is a good thing. I enjoy the comfort of someone elses presence, and I dont think words are always necessary so many things can be expressed per lack of them. So why do people feel akward when things go silent?

If I'm with Friends - and there are a few moments of Silence - sometimes it's nice. Shows that everyone's relaxed & comfortable with each other.

However, If I'm alone...sitting among Strangers...in a Doctor's Office, for example...It makes me very Uncomfortable!

Nobody really wants to be there! Nobody is there to make friends!...And, Nobody seems willing to Break-the-Silence!

Why? I think people are afraid to say anything...especially the wrong thing, or something stupid...when they know that every stranger in that room will shift their attention to them...and will be forming an impression of them...based on something they've said or asked.

Most people follow the lead of the others that remain silent...If someone speaks up, without anything to say really...You know that person is feeling uncomfortable...They appear nervous, or weak, in your mind...and if they keep speaking intermittently without getting any/or little response...You begin to question their Sanity!

I think its becaise people associate happiness generally speaking, with noise and sounds an also they figure that the sure way to tell if another person is happy, they will be more vocal than silent. I actually feel this way as well but it all depends on the settig, who Im with, what the mood of the moment is, and what the person is like (if they are or are not usually talkative).

GOOD QUESTION! I know why I think. Because when people are in complete silence others are wondering what they are thinking...getting paranoid or even insecure. It's all good though.....

Because they allow themselves to feel awkward. I like silence, too.
