Implement a surveillance system. It records anyone stepping foot on your property...unless you are looking for reason to shoot him. Dude be smart.
Can you pay for a good lawyer? Is it worth pissing away good money for that because you will.
Right or wrong in the legal world is blurred. ASK OJ.
Keep the green in your pocket.

Sounds to me like you handled it well. Hopefully, they won't come back (or anyone like them). If the same kind of thing were to happen again, I'd say handle it similarly. Shoot only if they actually break in. The way you handled it, you're protected from legal retribution, as well as from the feeling you'd always have that you might not have had to kill someone. Meanwhile, you might want to double check your security, e.g., be sure you've got good lights outside, cleared brush, possibly a security system or a dog. I hope the police sent someone to check out your place, take descriptions, etc. If not, you should document the incident in writing, include a full description if possible, and go see them.

I am a firm disbeliever in the phrase "shoot to kill". There are some exceptions to this but for the most part I would only shoot someone to wound them so they couldn't get away and the police could arrest them but I have had some Mexicans try to break into my house when I was there alone with my toddler and I would have shot them right between the eyes had they made it in. They were my neighbors and you think they're going to let my live after they break in and do what they want to me knowing I can ID them...no.

I hate to tell you, especially if I'd had kids in the house, I think I would have shot and thought later. I'm glad you were able to get this person away. I hope they never come back. They know what they'll be faced with if they do.
You certainly have the legal right to shoot the person. However, if that had been the case, you may have had to sit in jail while things were sorted out.

The Invader MUST be inside your home!!! Not just on the property. And then you have the right to DEFEND yourself and your family, with equal force. If he had no weapon you could have got in trouble for shooting him.
Check the laws in your local police dept. before you bust a cap in someones butt.

Legally the problem has been documented because whenever an incident happens the police have to draw up an "Incident Report." So it looks better. But even so, even without it, you have every right to protect your property and your life. As long as you fear for your life blow his/her *** to smithereens! And if they are in your yard drag them in your house, lol. (But leave no trail of blood. CSI really does come in handy.)

I would only shoot if they got inside the house. Hopefully you scared the urine out of them and they won't come back.
If they do come back and attempt to break in call the cops before you confront them. Standby with your weapon in case they get in.
Don't go shooting people unless you absolutely have to in order to protect your life. You can't take it back once you do it and you will have to life with killing someone the rest of your life.

I think the man probably crapped his pants so bad he'd never want to come back, but if you have no other choice you need to fire. It should always be your last course of action. That way everything in the law would have it be ruled as self-defense.

I may be slightly ignorant for saying this, but you should have waited untill they were inside... After that it's all over for them.
Next time they might come back armed, and with help. Think about it.

THe part that sucks is that sure you legally could have shot him, but then if he gets hurt on your property even of he is breaking in and cuts his finger or something, he could sue you for damages, ****** up system we have isn'tit?
