Faraday Cage maybe?

They insulate from electormagnetic radiation.

Foil isn't the best thing, but it's cheap and would do the job.

Also, it certain materials reflect a high degree of radiative energy (check the inside of a nice thermos) and thus restrict heat transfer and foil could have this property but I really don't know about that.

Foil Ceiling Insulation

yea.. foil is pretty tough. I'm sure it could be used as insulation... I bake with it all the time and I never have to use pot-holders to take it out of the oven.. I just pick up the foil - it doesn't get hot. So... in that, I'm sure you can call it insulation - keeps the heat in and cold out in the winter; and the cold in and the heat out in the summer... right?

Yes..i wud say...
U c.. anything thats properly polished or silvered is very gud at reflefcting away heat that cums in as radiation...by keeping internal heat within the house arent we insulating the house from losing it to the outside world??
Its the same as in a thermos flask where on the inside u find sum silver coating that is brighly polished...
This coating is called insulation and it prevents heat from escaping the flask(4 hot liquids) via radiation as it reflects the ir rays that all hot bodies emit...
and so for further clarification feel free to mail me...

foil is a pretty good insulator. now, it is in no way as good as styrofoam or other insulators, but it is better than what most people think.
