I'm trying to help publicise a non profit organisation that helps people with their inventions - it's run by inventors for inventors - how do we get more coverage to simply let others know we exist?

Contact writers at your local and major newspapers.

Start your pitch with a local angle. Is one of the participants from the outlet's coverage area? Is one of the inventions particuarly relevant to that particular area?
As for whom to pitch, review past articles by the reporter before reaching out, and reference them in your pitch. A major media pet peeve is being pitched news that doesn't relate to their beat.
Finally, work the Internet. Put your org's URL everywhere it is relevant. Pitch bloggers to post a link to your group. Find forums where you (or a member of the org) can post as experts while, subtly, reminding people about the org's mission.
Good luck.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore as well. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

Write a paragraph or two about your non profit organization, answering the question, "what, who, when, and why" and go in person to the newspaper and hand it to the appropriate person.

You can submit your press release to http://www.prweb.com . and on http://www.fpsnewswire.com/home.asp . I visited http://www.about.com and found other resources by conducting a search for the phrase "submit press release"
