I don't care how many people tell you that there is a sequel to Gone with the wind written by Alexandra Ripley called Scarlett. Don't believe them. Avoid it. And whatever you do NEVER EVER sit through the movie sequel Scarlett. It is about 5x worse than the book...if that is possible...which obviously it was.

I think the point of the ending was to leave you thinking. I think that for every reader of Gone With The Wind...they'd be a different answer to the question...does Rhett come back...and do they live happily ever after. It is an interactive ending in that it can have a haunting effect on the reader leaving them wanting more but requiring that they find the answers within themselves. It asks that you not only read the words...but that you examine the souls and inner motivations of these characters. Margaret Mitchell would have never in a million years wanted a sequel to Gone With The Wind.

I have read Gone With The Wind at least 12 times...if not more...and there is no substitute for the original.

No, he leaves, just as Scarlett, realizes how much she loves him, and that her obsession with Ashley, was just an infatuation. A really long infatuation.
She realizes she needs Rhett as he is a mans mans, and is the only one who really understands her.
But he has had enough and leaves.

Like you I also had to know if they would ever get back together, so I read the sequel by Alexandra Ripley, named "Scarlett". In this horrible sequel (emphasis placed on "horrible') Scarlett has changed. She has become benevolent, rather than malevolent. she has a child with Rhett, who she names "Cat". Rhett remains ignorant of the fact that he is a daddy, until he saves both mother and child from a burning building, in Ireland.

I hope this pithy summary has discouraged you to read the sequel. Fie on Alexandra Ripley!

That's a good question and one you might be able to answer yourself if you wish to write the sequel there was never a sequel to the book. Good luck I would try and check with Maraget Mitchell's family before you start on this venture since they may want to okay this venture for legal and copywrite law and all that legal stuff.

It's so much better not to know (as I regretfully found out when I read that god-awful sequel). The point isn't whether or not he'll come back; it's that Scarlett's strength is in the land, Tara.
