They're called laundromats. Essentially there are a few rows of industrial washing machines and a few rows of industrial dryers. The have coin slots in them. You put your soap and your clothes in, put your money in, and the washer starts washing your clothes. You can put it on whatever setting you need. You bring your own detergent, or buy little boxes of it from the vending machines.

The same goes for the dryers. Put your clothes in, put your money in the slot, and it dries them. You have to be careful, though, because those dryers run very hot sometimes and you can ruin delicate clothes. There are usually wire baskets on wheels to take your wet clothes from the washer to the dryer, and then to empty the dryer. And there are usually countertops or tables for you to fold your clothes on.

And believe me, if you can afford a washer and dryer at home, you get them, because going to the laundromat is a BIG hassle!
