I work at a hotel third shift. My boss wants me to take out trash before 5 AM. It is still dark out, not well lit (lighting), and I must do it alone with only the aide of a flashlight. Is there a law (USA) that protects workers from this?

sorry, but no. work safety laws protect you from having to do something that is known to have a threat to your health and safety. they do not cover the potential for a threat to your person. i would tell your boss your concerns and request that someone accompany you to take out the trash, or you could refuse the task based on a fear for your safety. but i only reccomend that course of action if you are located in a high crime area and could prove the potential for harm.

get someone to help you with the trash! safety in numbers. attackers are less likely to attack if they believe the odds of getting caught are increased.

probably not. refuse to do so alone, since he will be responsible if something happens to you. You might want to ask head office what their policy on women being alone at night is.
