Why are people so unkind?

Why are people so unkind?

Basically, we are animals competing for territory and identity in a hierarchy of power, both in the family and the wider world. Our self-interest in survival for ourselves or for our own is an animal instinct which can cause unkindness (or worse) to others. Compassion, or unconditional kindness, comes from our higher human mind.

Caroline Flynn, Noraville

We are creatures of finite understanding living in an infinite universe. Each person's world view can never be more than an approximation of reality. If that person is unwilling to adjust his or her world view to individual circumstances, the result will be at best absurd and at worst very harmful. Hence everything from noisy neighbours to Osama bin Laden.

If everyone on Earth were to die tomorrow, how much land would it take to bury them?

It would take no land to bury them because they'd all be dead.

Ian Hamilton, Byron Bay

And just who exactly would be doing the burying - Martians?

Amanda Bartlett, Gladesville

Assuming the average-sized plot is 3.75 square metres, and the world population is 6.2 billion, then the total land required is 23,000 square kilometres. As the area of the Earth's surface is 148 million square kilometres, there is plenty of room, even allowing for hills, mountains, etc.

What is the origin of "humdinger"?

It is a night cart with a bell on it. This goes back to the days before we had sewerage in Sydney and the toilets were emptied by hand into a cart that toured the city and suburbs.

Raymond Meppem, Beacon Hill

Most respected etymologists claim that the word's origin is unknown, but dinger meant "something amazing" or "something superlative" as far back as 1809. There is no dispute that humdinger (and dinger, for that matter) are American in origin.

When did women start shaving their legs?

Paul Roberts (June 8-9) stated that cave paintings show that hair tweezing existed 100,000 years ago. The oldest accurately dated painting on a rock surface is found at Carpenters Gap in the southern Kimberley and is 39,700 years old. Also, I am unaware of any evidence of edge-wear or residue analysis that would indicate the use of flint blades for the purposes of shaving.

Some misplaced idea that insulting others will make them look better. This behavior has been with us for a long time. I keep hoping it's about time for all this to change, but I am only responsible for my own actions and behaviors. A good part of the time I'm pretty considerate, but occasionally I get snippy. I never like myself when I've spewed at another person, and I usually have apologized unless they insist that I'm at fault (this is used as a defense mechanism so they don't have to take responsibility).

People are unkind because they are very insecure and instead of learning about themselves and examining their lives, they take the cheap path and get nasty with others.

Peace.

It's easier to be mean to someone than it is to be nice to them. It also gives people a feeling of power.
