If you've been to the doctor and he/she has ruled out any serious or immediate threat to your health, I would like to suggest chiropractic care as a treatment option.
When the spinal bones (called vertebrae) are misaligned, they can pinch the nerves that run out between them and cause pain, numbness/tingling, or any type of general malfunction to that nerve's corresponding body part. Herniated disks also place this kind of pressure on nerves, which can be very painful. Chiropractic works to restore the proper positioning of the spine to remove any such pressure on the nerves. This is done via adjustments, which are safe, non-invasive, and don't involve drugs that only mask the symptoms of pain but do nothing to correct the actual problem.
If you do decide to see a chiropractor, ask family and friends for recommendations, visit a few offices, and choose the doctor that you are most comfortable with. I can't guarantee a cure, but chiropractic has tremendous success in helping people with back pain. Best of luck to you!

I would not know any exercise, but perhaps you want to get rid of the pain anyway:
Go for a manual one-time treatment called Atlasprofilax. The spine will be set straight for the first time in your life, and the muscles around will be much more relaxed so the pain should slowly disappear.
It's really worth travelling far - at present, the treatment is available in California and Europe only, costing around 200 Dollars. Good luck!
