Very good question, because women believe they are inferior, and to the person who said put you're own seat up.. GO PUT YOU'RE OWN SEAT DOWN WOMAN!

I've totally wondered this too, and I think it comes down to the proper function and design of the toilet seat.

It's original, natural state is the bowl, with the hinged seat in a horizontal position, framing the lip of the bowl, resting on it for the purpose of supporting our asses when we asseyez to take a crap/pee, etc. (ha, etc...)

Now, is that the reason women give when b*tching at their significant others for leaving the seat up?: "You're completely disregarding the platonian form of the toilet when you leave the seat up!" No, alas, it's mostly just because we don't like the idea of touching the toilet seat laden with spattered feces remnants, or, some more extreme women, take it as a reflection on how much their man does or doesn't care about them, based upon his inconsderation in not putting it back down.

But yeah, without bias, since the unadulterated toilet (one which neither a man or woman is using) is designed with the seat down, (I mean we don't go toilet shopping at Home Depot and find the seats up) it makes sense that when it isnt being used, the seat should be down, to remain true to its design.

Because you guys never get up in the middle of the night to pee, leave the light off, and sit right down into the toilet because the seat's been left up! Talk about a rude awakening!

Have that happen to you a time or two and you'll put the seat down every time!

If the toilet seat is down when you flush, less vapor from the toilet gets out of the bowl. And moreover, since guys occasionally have to crap, all in all, assuming equal urination between women and men, the toilet seat is used in the down posistion more often than the up posistion.

Besides, if the seat is up and you sit down thinking it's down, you go PLOP! into the water. If the seat is down, and you think it's up, then you look down and see "Hey... the seat's down!" After all, if you're going to sit, you're facing away from the toilet, so you have less chance to double check that the seat is down (let's say you have raging dysentary). It's just more practical to leave the seat down.

Also, if you leave the seat down, and use the cover, then the dog/cat/whatever can't (easily anyway) drink toilet water.

Have you ever gotten up in the middle of the night to pee sitting down and almost fell in and were shocked by the cold porcelain and disgusted by a hairy, pee crusted rim that you just sat on, so then you will have to wash yourself and all you wanted to really do was take a pee and fall back to sleep? Do unto others man.

I have a friend where she and her mother were the only females and they were outnumbered by two brothers and dad. Yet all the males were expected to put the seat down even though they outnumbered the women. While I don't agree with that completely, it so sucks to have to take down your pants or lift a skirt and pull down any hosiery and the rest before we can pee. Sometimes those moments get pretty intense, so the fewer moves we have to make, the better it works for us.

We don't just get to unzip a fly and go wee-wee-wee all the way home.

I hope this helps.

Well, the natural position of the toilet is "seat down," hence it being called a seat. Assuming one man and one woman, the seat would need to be down 75% of the time (if you understand what I mean) and 25% is only from the man's side (assuming normal anatomy, lol).

It's normal for it to be put back in its original position.

Best wishes.

It's mostly because men do pee in the seat and girls don't want to sit on that, since we do have to sit on the seat, it's just polite for you guys to do that for a girl it's like opening the car door...plus you guys got everything easy in life and you could do this thing for your girl at least, right???? She will appreciate it and you have made me think of the other side of this issue, so now I will nag less about this because you guys can do the same thing but don't ....just be considerate and tell her that you will try not to forget next time.....

If you've ever landed *** first in cold toilet water in the middle of the night you'd know the reason. Also, it just looks nicer with the seat down and the lid closed. When you have small children you need to do this for safety reasons.

Toilet seats belong down in the same way that phones belong hung up, refrigerator doors belong shut, hampers belong closed, and all sorts of things around the house need to be closed, put back or restored to their original position.

Why SHOULD a man complain about order?

I've wondered that myself!

In our household we put both the seat and the cover down. There's never a question on what we have to do even in the dark. She lifts one and I lift two. (Unless going # two) It looks nicer, keeps the water from evaporating (hahaha), makes the flushes a little quiter, and keeps the peace in our family. No more arguments!
