I asked this and got a good answer but I want to open it up again so more people can comment. What is better recoveryfree, nothing at all or AA? or something else maybe?

because it is cloaked it a sheath of respectability.
There is an illusion that is hard to penetrate.
the belief that God can heal all sorts of afflictions permeates this culture, so the AA claims are attractive myths that people want to believe are true...kinda like the Da Vinci Code. It is total FICTION
a made up story...but
some of the people who read it become so enamored with the plot line that they 'wish' it to be true. and with magical thinking they believe that if they can get enough people to believe then it will somehow become true.
I know that makes no sense but that is how magical thinking works.

I guess I'm one of the 5% that actually WORKED THE PROGRAM and have been clean and sober for 16 years.
It's all about HONESTY.
If the sufferer refuses to be brutally honest about himself, he will never recover in AA.
AA is not the failure.
The person who refuses to be honest is the failure.
Anyone who says, "AA doesn't work for me" is lying.
It is them, themselves, who don't HONESTLY work the program of AA, so they fail themselves.
It's not AA's fault that the sufferer refuses to actually work the program with vigilance and rigorous honesty.
There are other alternatives out there, but I do not recommend them. That's just me.
The disease of addiction is a difficult thing to treat, and science hasn't yet been able to find the link between addiction and recovery.
AA will work for anyone willing to be brutally honest with themselves.
