It happens at times when the installation is not as good as it has to and some critical dll file get corrupted. You can just go ahead, uninstall the older version and restart your PC. Then go to c:\program files\Yahoo\Messenger and delete all the files in there. You have to be careful doing this as this will wipe out all the settings and archives you have on Messenger except for buddy list.
Hope it works else message me...:)

unfortunatly, the last few days have been bad to try and install and use messenger. the servers are having problems and most of the users have been unable to connect/sign in and use the messenger service. i'd stay away from aol....we have more callers with problems that are using aol. your trouble might be with a firewall turned onon your pc, the cookie settings set to high not allowing incoming traffic/ maybe its a popup blocker. go to your internet explorer tools, and options, delette offline files/cookies etc and try again in a few hours. users have been having trouble for days, today at the library was HELL due to broken Y!IM my users resorted to microsoft's instant messenger. or maybe the text setting on the IM is set to the same color as the background, hence the text would be "hidden" try changing the color of text first. that would be easiest. or maybe its just broken. good luck hi to ma

If its messenger beta 9 you're using, uninstall it and bypass lower back to a prior versionfor the time being. Beta ability unfinished or nevertheless in progression. you are able to constantly reinstall it whilst the gadget defects/bugs have been taken care of out. web pages listed below have each and all the variations of yahoo messenger thats ever existed. i'm hoping that helps you.

I understand your frustration with Yahoo!messenger....I'm there too!If following directions on "Help" didn't help, then send direct e-mails to Yahoo and ask. I am having so many problems with them, including the scroll on the windows are not showing(not a sizing problem) but figured a way to get to bottom of page to hit enter anyway...Hope they will read this and help us.

The first thing that occurs to me is that your mother has some kind of pop-up blocker or other web security program that is blocking YM. It wouldn't surprise me that a messaging program was being blocked by a security program.
Check out her security programs, and then try disabling them one-by-one in order to find the culprit. Chances are, if you find a security program gumming up the works, it has options that will allow programs like YM to work.
