I've been washing clothes for 40 years.- using cold water only.
It has been proven the use of hot or warm water for washing makes no difference. It used to be thought that the hotter the water temperature the more germs you would kill. The quality of wash powder/liquid is the key to clean wash and using oxyclean for stains. Some clothes will "run" no matter what the water temperature. Sorting out the colours, from the whites, from the darks and red is a must.
Well, back to the washing -2 full loads a day, 6 days a week UGH!!!

It depends. I usually wash my clothes in warm water. If you have new clothes the hot water may make the color fade and dye everything else in the wash, or they could shrink. On the other hand unless you are using a cold water detergent if you have clothes that have bad stains they might not come out. So that is why I go with warm water!

For whites, you wana wash with hot water. For Dark colors, wash with Cold. The hot takes out stains real good on white clothes. Cold water doesn't fade out dark and color clothes.

Really depends on if your water is well or city water, Hard or soft. Cold water seems to remove stains and hot will set the stain and ruin your clothes. To cut cost on electric more people are using cold and getting the better detergents. Another hint use a scoop of baking soda in your laundry. Really makes your clothes fresh.

Hot water gets them cleaner. And water is not going to set a stain. It's water.
