how would i go about troubleshooting my alternator?

Remove your cables from the battery and clean them real good first. Sounds like a bad connection to me. On a gasoline engine it has to have some voltage to fire, work the fuel pump, relays etc. To check the Alt. use a volt meter check voltage at the battery. Start the engine check again. Voltage should increase. It should be between 13v and 14 volts when it idles
