most of the best short films i have seen have to do with real life daily activities(going to work, school, shopping, dating). try to draw from your own life. simply events can have the most profound effect

I have many ideas for short films... That I plan on filming, so I'll keep them to myself, thank you.
Honestly, though, the first short films I made I always made up on the spot. My friend and I would say: "We're bored, let's film something", grab a couple props and go. I've even created a series of stop-animation movies featuring Duplo blocks about a red block that drives animals crazy at the zoo.

take the lyrics from a favorite song of yours and consider how you would make a movie that expresses the same ideas.
or, make a music video for the song.
Try retelling a favorite movie or book of yours.
I used to have fun "hiring" neighbor kids as actors. You need to be patient with them but also not waste a lot of time on each scene. Don't do too much each day. Give them their line and reherse it a couple of times before filming it. It's a lot of fun.

I recently made a short film with my DVC. I love to take road trips with friends and thought it would be great to film every gas station we stopped at from Houston, TX to Chicago, IL. The film was called High Octane Food. I filmed the types of food available at each gas station, the foods we actually bought, and how long it took for us to eat the food.

Give the camera to kids and let them shoot all over the place. They are able to build trust that adults can not engender. Get all of the footage back and then make a story out of it via editing and rearranging the footage. Send me a royalty check. 1% will be fine. Good luck!!

A day in the life of a toaster. Stick a camera on the toaster and let it run all day, I'm betting you'll be surprised about what goes on in your own kitchen.
