The size of the diamond is only one part of a good purchase. The general rule of thumb is that you spend 3 months of your salary on the engagement (whatever that may be.) So the value of the ring is relative to your income.
Please...don't get a large, but poor quality diamond.
Diamonds have 4 C's: Carots (size), Colour, Clarity, and Cut.
Each diamond you look at will have specific ratings for each C. Do some research on diamonds before making your special purchase. Good luck!

1/2 carat is a nice size-for starters. Not too big & not too small. Some diamonds are better than others. You'll want a clear diamiond that does not fade over time (some do). And go to the jewelry store-not Kmart or JC Penney's.

Just to get an idea of size, cost & clarity, go browsing. Just for future referance. Do you have a sister that can go with you? Females always know what another female will like. Plus, use your own good judgement. Some females want to pick their own ring out (just so you'll know).

for engagement id say a good quality 1/2-3/4 carat then for the actaul wedding ring go bigger and of course then she can help pick it so id keep the engagement ring simple that way you dont pick something way off from her taste and spend a bundle on it. spend the bundle (if you have it) on something she for sure likes!!

Now see, I am from a different culture, so I never really got that whole 'the ring needs to be a big as possible'-thing....

3 months of wages???? you could also use that money to make your start of married life eaiser.... A ring is a ring, it is not the size of your love....

i read somewhere it can depend on your ring size...
you would take your size and devide that in half, then you would devide that in half, or close as you can, and you should get to the size that would look good on your finger.
8=1 tp2 ct
7= 1 1/4 to 1 1/2ct
6=3/4 tp 1ct ,
but thats just what i read somewhere in a bridal mag.........
get what you can afford without looking ...you know...
my mom just wanted a band, because that meant eternity.....

depends on your girl, is she high maintenence type? I always thought 3/4 carrot was nice but i am easily satisfied.
