To answer this, you must first decide how serious you are going to get into playing guitar.
If you are looking into a cheap guitar just to learn and play, go for the electric guitars around or under 100 dollars. My first guitar was a "drive", an offbrand, and it cost me 80 dollars and is still working just fine (but is not my primary guitar).
If you want to get really into it, I'd recomend (since you get what you pay for in the music industry) you spend between 150 dollars to 300 dollars. Dont forget to get an amp.
If you like "thin" tone (claptin, hendrix etc.) get single coil pickups, if you like a richer sound, go for "humbuckers", they have a richer sound, and ironically are even used in metal.
TRUST ME, AVOID LOCKING TREMOLO BRIDGES! GET STANDARD, BECAUSE OTHERWISE IT WILL BE A PAIN TO RESTRING.
PS dont forget to buy a cable, amp, etc. n_n

if you're just getting started, get something inexpensive... like a squier strat or maybe something used. Like a lot of people have said on here, gibson makes great instruments, but they're really expensive. you can get epiphones (which are supposed to be similar to gibsons) for much cheaper. I think there's an epiphone SG for about $189. Bottom line is, you don't know how committed you'll be later on or if you'll stick with it, so do yourself a favor and start on something cheap. You can always get better instruments later (though I'm still quite fond of my first guitar... lol).

OOOOH! An electric. If you are just learning, you might not want to spend a lot of money on one. Fender Stratacasters are really nice, but way pricey.

Fender Stratocaster or Telecaster........you can buy a used, but good one, for under $500.00.........Don't buy anything too cheap, as it makes learning harder, mostly from inferior fretwork, bridge, and pickups on cheap models.......If you do go for a Fender, make sure it is in the Amercian made series.............. :-)
