Arobic excercise is one way also you can use lighter weights and more reps. Make sure you body is toned before attempting to lift more weight. You can hurt yourself bad if you go to fast. Take it slow. Gradually add more weight and do less reps.Example: 15 reps. light weight. 3 sets. that is to tone the body. When this becomes easy add 5-10 more pounds and continue. Each person is different. You will know. Your body will let you definately know. Eat A good diet and get plenty of rest. Your body rebuilds itself while sleeping or at rest. Eventually you will be lifting the weight you want and you will bulk up.
