When you're ripping your song, you should set a lower bitrate.

If you're using Windows Media Player to rip your CD, go to
Tools--> Options and click on the "Rip Music" tab. Under Rip Settings, adjust the Audio Quality.

A 128kbps mp3 will sound reasonable on a normal mp3 player. A 96kbps will sound better than radio quality.

The only way to reduce file size is to lower your bitrate settings while ripping. This will speed up the ripping process but this will also result in lower audio recording quality of the original. Try different bit rates to see which are acceptable to you.
