most fashion designers, who happen to be male and gay, do not really like the stereotypical 'beautiful' model for their shows or shoots. they like them 'edgy', 'interesting', 'with character'.
beautiful girls end up being beauty queens or catalog models. not high fashion models as in stalking the runways of paris/milan/nyc or appearing in vogue.
women, well-adjusted ones that is, should be the best version of themselves as possible. and not try to ape anyone. least of all, an anorexic-looking 18 year old girl who wears and takes off clothes for a living.

There are beautiful runway models and some which are not. You can't really generalize about *all* of them. But, as a fashion photographer, my two cents are:
Runway models are chosen primarily because of their stature, build and runway talent. They are meant to show off the clothes and ability to adapt their motion to different themes and personas. While they focus in this area, they are not necessarily "beautiful" in the mainstream perception.
Print models, on the other hand, are usually chosen for their beauty and modeling talents. The modeling talents usually involve facial expressions, nuances, and ability to adapt.
So given those two rough groups I've put models into, runway models make clothes look good. Sometimes, runway models that look "different" are a big hit simply because they are not conventionally beautiful.
To answer your other question: No, I do not think all women should look like high fashion models. Women should look how they want to look and not try not aspire to become anybody else. I've known many models who were beautiful on the outside, but had ugly personalities and that I can't deal with.

I have been surprised as to how many high fashion models are actually well ugly. I would expect them to have beautiful bodies, faces, and hair, but many look like they were in a fight a few moments before they hit the runway. In my opinion the most beautiful model would have to be Tyra Banks, not only is she tall and beautiful but her personality has alot to do with it.

No, I do not think that starvation is the least bit sexy. Who is anyone to say what a woman should look like? This subject is the reason women have so many self-issues and eating disorders. I don't want to be 6 foot tall, and I'll be the first to tell anyone, I KNOW I'm sexy, whether I weigh 150 or 350. I've never had any trouble getting men, so maybe attitude counts for more than weight.

I think "high fashion" models have distinct, unique looks (not all of them, but many of them) that catch the eye of designers, therefore making them models. I don't necessarily think that all models are "beautiful," yet fashion designers think they can convey and express whatever their clothing also expresses. For example, Kate Moss, when she first appeared on the modeling scene, was not known for her "beauty" as much as her waif-like, heroin-chic look. However, beauty is also all about perception to you too; what one person thinks is beautiful might be seen as totally unattractive to another person.

Only Adrian Lama(spelling?)Brazilian Victoria's Secret model. She has the neatest eyes and she isn't anorexic looking. Tyra Banks also-but I don't think she's modeling anymore(I know she isn't modeling for Victoria's Secret anymore).

So many of them ARE beautiful.
The only thing which we should worry about is calling a living skeleton beautiful when it's in fact unhealthy to starve yourself.

My daughter is a an actively working model of 5'11. She has done runway and print. myspace.com/ohioheart for some of her work. She is naturally thin and built like a 12 year old boy and wishes she were more shapely but she is playing the hand she was dealt and is doing quite well I might add!!
