What do you think of Slice of Life Movies?

How would you consider a movie like Whats Eating Gilbert Grape different from other movies? Do you consider slice of life films unique?

"Slice of Life" movies usually try to show what life is like for all the characters for a specific period of time and/or events. They are unique in that they try to show the same situation from the different characters perspectives where many movies are just showing us the story from the main character's perspective.

The trend now seems to be to have mixed up slices of life that are show to us out of sequence and it is not until the end of the movie that the pieces of the puzzle, how the characters are related, come together, like the movie "21 Grams". I think what they are trying to do is create suspense, but all they evoke are confusion.
