The average person, in either hemisphere of the planet at night, can easily see upwards of 2500 stars......that's most of the stars down to about mag 6. If you take into account atmospheric extinction near the horizon and such, that total would rise to around 9000 under ideal conditions (no extinction), as each star of a certain magnitude would disappear from sight as atmopsheric effects blurred the light from the star, as the viewing angle of the star to the horizon decreased.

However, if you want to be pendantic about it, and you count the unresolved light of the spiral arms as well, you could say that you can see millions of stars every night.

By "in the sky" I am going to assume you mean "in the universe, whether visible to the naked eye or not"

Best guestimate of stars in the Milky Way, our local galaxy is 400 billion and best guestimate of the number of galaxies in the Universe is "The Hubble Space Telescope has found there may be 125 billion galaxies in the universe."

Multiplying these together we get 5 x 10^22 for the number of stars in the known Universe.
