California has an economy that would be the fifth (or fourth, depending on how France is doing at any point in time) largest in the world, if it were an independent country. In other words, in your G8 example, California would be one of the eight economically powerful countries.

Then come New York, Texas, Pennsylvania, Florida, Michigan, Washington, and Georgia.

And, remember that our "poorest" states are rich by companison to sub-Saharan Aftrican countries (with a couple of exceptions).
