My sister is visiting August 14th. I know its the busy season but thats the only time I have off. I have to get down to Kyoto on 16th-18th. We have a hotel and we are getting the 5,000 yen 3-day pass around for JR.

I'm just wondering what the cheapest way to get down there and if anyone knows the URLs for night buses and trains and what your opinion of both are? I took the night bus to Nagoya once and it was pretty comfortable. Slept like a baby.....maybe that was the whiskey though LOL

Yes you can take night bus, long trip though.

Ask your Japanese friend to check these sites and book.

Is Shinkansen expensive for you? Just 12,710 yen for non-reservation sheet per person from Tokyo to Kyoto. 2 hour and 20-40 min.

Japan is one of the few places that I would recommend hitch-hiking. Male-female is a good combination. Get a train out of the city on hitch on a main road. With a sign written in Kanji, you should never have to wait more than an hour- sometimes it will take 2 minutes. I had people take me (on toll-roads) more than 100kms beyond their destination and in two cases they were actually headed in the other direction and turned around! I was mostly picked up by families and single women so I was never concerned about my safety.

Well, there are ways you can cheat the JR...but I can't suggest that. The night buses are nice though, I once went from Sendai to Osaka on the night bus and it was no problem.

You should be able to use your Japan Rail pass. It's good for shinkansen also.

On foot is another option but you will need a few more days.
