It's a school that prepares you for university. These days just about every highschool in the US offers a college prep curriculum where every student who graduates has filled minimum requirements to get into some university depending on the requirements of the individual universities, but some do it as an absolute goal and expect to place most of their graduates in the more elite universities. I personally would prefer to have a system like they used to have in the Czech Republic. When I taught there, they had high schools for every sort of career you can imagine. At the age of about 16, students began learning practical skills for the career they had chosen, unless they decided they would attend university to study for a career that required a higher educational degree. In that case, they went to a gymnazium (a college prep school.) There were schools for restaurant work, dance schools, childcare schools, mechanics schools, all sorts of technical schools. There was even a school where students learned how to repair wooden, stringed instruments. Students continued to learn the basics of math, literature, science, etc., but the focus was shifted so that they learned less of that than students at college prep schools, and learned more practical skills. That's a system that values every sort of job, not just doctors, lawyers, engineers, etc. I'm sure they don't have it anymore. It is very expensive to run.
