i tried a masonary bit but the tip turned red hot. the main problem is that i am accually going through 3 surfaces 1 1/4 plywood glued to tile backed by concrete. if i use water to keep the bit cool it may ruin the plywood. the plywood also started to catch fire. can i drill without water?

YOU CAN BY A DIAMOND DRILL BIT AT HOME DEPOT OR YOUR LOCAL TILE STORE, FOR PLUMBING HOLES YOU WILL NEED A 1/3/8 INCH HOLE, A MASONARY BIT CAN BE USED FOR HOLES UNDER 3/4 OF AND INCH.

If using a spade bit, buy two bits, a small one to drill a piolet hole then advance to the size that you need, if you have someone to help you can have them to spritz the bit with water constantly while you are drilling as the bit will get hot, you can also apply a piece of tape on the tile to help keep it from chipping out while drilling.....they also make a diamond bit for drilling tile and glass. Check at your local hardware store or Lowes, Home Depot,
Menards, etc.....

Use a carbide tipped drill bit. Available at any hardware store. A standard masonry bit will not work on the fired side of ceramic tile.

you do get 15mm masonry drills I would drill a smaller pilot hole first. put some clear pva glue over where you wish to drill. this will stop the tile chipping. lay the tile on a firm surface. indent the tile with a nail,, just enough to chip out the glaze - to give the drill a start. drill pilot hole say 5 mm drill out to 10mm or you could drill just the 5mm hole and widen with a tile saw blade. might want to practice on an old tile.

Most masonry drills will work on tiles but the trick is to get started without the drill slipping on the glazed surace. To overcome this problem, place sticking tape where you want to drill the hole then drill through the tape.Works every time.

Easy, tried and tested loads of times. Use a normal masonry drill bit, with the drill NOT in hammer mode, drill through the tile, when your through put the drill IN hammer and drill through the concrete.
