"Avoid the near occasion of sin." Like don't hang around people that will encourage you to do the wrong thing. You know who they are. And if you are tempted to steal from a store, don't go in there unless somebody is with you to keep you honest. If you are tempted to have sex, don't be alone with the person. It may help if you confide in somebody trustworthy to hold you accountable. Remember, though, that everybody falls short; confession and forgiveness also help to keep you on the right path. If you are tempted to masturbate, (just being frank here) you can avoid things that arouse you, but few people avoid this entirely. Don't get hung up on it. If you are tempted to gossip against others, try to avoid the people who want to listen to it. Don't worry too much about what people think. In general, try to look at the big picture. What is more important, your moral character or the minor gratification you are tempted to cheat for?

I've been a Christian since June 14, 1984. I don't think that we will ever truly be free of temptation as long as we are still breathing on this planet. ;-)
Praying is a good start. Reading your Bible is another. Also, you might find you need someone you can talk with frankly. Maybe there is someone in your church who can be a mentor to you as you grow in your faith? When I first became a Christian, I was in college and I met a person who had been a Christian longer. She was generous with her time and patience and would answer all my silly questions. She would also direct me to books I should read and because I met with her often, I felt accountable to her.
Your journey is a long one....with lots of baby steps. You'll trip up from time to time, but I believe that God's grace is so vast and God's love for you is so deep that you will find your way....and He will be there to catch you when you fall. It's all gonna be ok!
P.S. When you get to Eternity....find me! You can tell me all about how you did during your many trips around the sun.

Avoiding temptation is unavoidable. You are a human being. And we human beings make mistakes all the time.
Listen. It sounds like to me in your comment that you want to experience stuff, but you know that it is wrong. My question to you is HOW do you know that it's wrong? Answer that question for yourself and go from there. If you know it's wrong with all your heart.. don't. If you don't understand if it is or not.. well then, my dear, you need to discuss that particular situation with someone personally. I would suggest that you discuss with your parents.
Mistakes are mistakes. Sin is also forgiveable upon request of God by His grace. You are a human being. You're gonna have sin and make mistakes. They are lessons to help us make the right choices as we continue in our lives. This learning/knowledge then turns to wisdom. Love yourself first.. and let wisdom be your guide. Look to your heart and determine for yourself whether or not this or that is a mistake or sin. You decide. That is what God wants us to do. He tells us that there is sin punishable by death.. well all sin usually does. However, we also are finite beings on this earth and we WILL sin. All sin is forgivable. Not being true to yourself and God is not.
Ease up on yourself. Continue to pray and live a life in Love with God. Remember that first.

Sin is fun for a season and always ends in disaster. God allows us to be tempted to test us and when we overcome we receive rewards and joy. Temptation will never end for anybody, but the overcomers will live a prosperous life. When you fall into temptation you will have to pay the consequences eventually.

Think of the consequences and make an informed decision. If you know it's wrong, then it should be an easy decision.
Remember that sometimes a moment of pleasure results in a lifetime of regret.

well we all sin and come short of the glory of god... i am not perfect but one thing that keeps coming into my mind is not to tempt the lord thy god.. and i know when i am doing this one thing wrong then go back and ask god to forgive me.. but god said it is better to marry than to burn.. i have been married three times and i do not want to go their again.. these were all abusive husbands but the man i date now likes to be boss and he thinks i should spend all my time with him,. i work and i have grandkids and friends.. so i do not think i want to go any farther with this either.. but anway just pray for god to give you strength and the knowledge to think about what you are wanting to do and maybe you will find it is not worth it... i know the home in heaven and living for god is the best way to live.. and god will help us through things one day at a time if we seek him and listen to him...i hope this helps without getting into a lot of detail i should not get into..

Remind yourself that God is always there, watching what you do. Avoid situations where you're going to be tempted. And if your mind starts to wander, force yourself to think of something else. Pop in a disney movie, listen to Christian music.

You cant.
No one can.
Paul said " I do what I know I should not, and often dont do what I know I should.. what is this within me that makes me do so?"
We are tempted and we fail.
Resists, win some lose some.
Your forgiven.
Jesus is the only boss that counts effort not success.

If you really wanted to stop yourself, you would. But to err is human and that's what God has made us all. Also, confession is good for the soul as they say and God is always loving and forgiving.

Only Christians know about controlling temptation? Don't you think that's a bit close-minded?
