they are at war because the majority of arab countries do not want israel to exist. these countries allow terrorist groups in them with one purpose. to get rid of israel.thats why its imperative for israel to be extreme and heavy handed to there response against any terrorist activity.remember israel is not recognized as a nation by many arab nations, and israel has not been the aggresor in these altercations just a responder

Long answer - Hexabollah kidnapped 2 Israeli soldiers and killed 8 others in the process. They are holding those soldiers ransom for the release of prisoners in Israel. Hezbollah is almost an arm of the Lebanon government. They control most of southern Lebanon. Instead of acquiescing to their demands, Israel is attacking Hezbollah until the soldiers are released.
Short answer - Israel is a Jewish nation, Lebanon is an Islamic nation. Israel fought muslims for control of the land they currently hold. Muslims hate them for taking that land, and believe they are infidels (along with the rest of the western world).

Israel hold 3 lebanese prisoners in captivity since a long time and refused to set them free.
Hezbollah militants (from Lebanon) crossed the Israeli borders and kidnapped 2 soldiers in order to exchange them with 3 Lebanese prisoners.
And here some history between the 2 nations:
-Israel had invaded Lebanon before.
-Israel had kidnapped lebanese before on 2 different occasions.
-Hezbollah had fooled an Israeli intelligence officer before and hold him in captivity.
You need to know there have been 4 times of prisoners exchange between Lebanon and Israel before, Germany played the proxy for prisoners exchange process, since there is no direct contact between the 2 nations.
This time Israel did not want to negotiate and wanted to settle this using its forces.

lebanon got Iran and some arab countries on it's side, Israel got USA on it's side,, helping it and supporting it with alll means of weapons and methouds 2 kill more innocent people and take children away from their parents...
the war is because Bush and Isreal thinks that Hezbullah are terrorists as much as they think that every girl wearing a scarf or says that God do exist is a terrorist...
the reason that this war started is that Hezbuallah took 2 hostages and then Israel decided to kill the whole lebanese people to get back her 2 dogs ... that is the reason why lebanon now is down. it got no 1 building standing up

To put in simple words, Israelis are pissed off because two of thier soldiers were captured by Hizbollah, which is a non military religous guerilla group fighting for Islam & are against jews and Israelis. So what the Israelis are doing right now is killing up to 355 Lebanese civilians just trying to reach Hizbollah and disarm them, whereas Hizbollah is doing its best to counter attack and killed 34 Israelis so far.
There shouldnt be anybody on anyones side really, we should be all on humanity's side! Shame on the leaders, what a disgrace!

it's all about land.
israel has tried to push troops into lebanon once before, unsuccesful in the past. now they feel, even with a weak air force, that it's the right time to push their ground troops forward and use 'Hezbollah' as a front...like all countries at war, scapegoats are key fundamentals.

A. the Lebanons held captive an Israely officer
b. the people there arent that bright and just seem to be avble to talk things though.... its very sad, they even started killing every male old enough to fight thats pretty young over there.. and it jsut stupid..but really theres not much we can do with out using military powers
