that melanin converts sunlight into vitamin D?

I read this in a wholistic health book. I suppose after all it is a pigment and pigments do something similar in plants (assist in converting light to food). I came to this because I can't drink whole milk and I was looking for a better source of Vitamin D. And low and behold the book says sunlight! True?

It helps convert Calcium into Vitamin D I believe. You can always get supplements if you can't drink milk. Try these books:
The Maker's Diet by Jordan S. Rubin
any book by Dr. Don Colbert
Natural Cures THEY Don't Want You to Know About by Kevin Trudeau.

Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin that is found in food and can also be made in your body after exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun. Sunshine is a significant source of vitamin D because UV rays from sunlight trigger vitamin D synthesis in the skin
