My dryer is broken! We recently moved and when I went to use my dryer, I turned it on for about 10 minutes and it started smelling all burnt (like electrical burnt smell). So, I turned it off and when you touched any part of the dryer it was really hot...almost too hot to touch. Does anyone know what is wrong with it? It is an older model Kenmore dryer.

Overheating Dryer

It sounds to me like you have a problem with your venting. The vent hose may be kinked when the dryer was pushed back against the wall or a bird or a critter may have built a nest inside the vent where it goes through the wall. When dryers are moved the lint that gets past the lint filter that settles in the inside of the dryer is disturbed and upon starting the dryer up the first time some gets sucked up into the heating element and will cause a burning smell. If there was a fire where the lint was burning as can be in rare circumstances you probably would have a smoke condition.

Sounds to me a wire could have gotten pinched during the move and it may be grounding out on the dryer itself. Pull the plug out, pull the dryer out away from the wall and check the cord.

Have you tried emptying the lint trap? Or perhaps there is lint INSIDE the dryer. You know lint does not just get stuck in the trap. Lose particles build up around the wiring inside and can cause the dryer to overheat and/or catch fire. Perhaps you have a guy around who can help take it apart and clean around the wiring and underneath the outer shell. If this does not help I suggest hitting some garage sales and finding a new one. LOL

Be carefull. Unplug it or if it is on gass turn off the gass. It is better to be safe than to be sorry. Call a appliance repair shop for expert advice.

Open the back and check the belt. Could be in a bind.
