Just try to work in any jobs that will help you toward your certification. Any little bit, including volunteering, looks great on a resume.

As someone that hires people and having certifications myself, absolutely not. Are they required at times, of course, but not the criteria for me hiring someone. When I am hiring someone I look at three things - ability to learn, people skills, and motivation. While there are other intangibles, these are the main things I look at.

I have multiple certifications from multiple vendors. My opinion on cerfications is that it proves you can pass a test. It does not say anything about your skills at designing or troubleshooting networks. That being said, a person with a CCNA would have an edge over a similarily qualified applicant without the certification. Show me what you have done in the business world. If you are just starting out - rely on the strengths you have. Sell a potential employer on the intangibles.

most people want experienced people, so if u get a certification, it does show that u know ur stuff and is much better than none. but u will also need experience, like get hired, cus thy more u r hired, thy more credit u can give urself for working for so and so.
