One major issue that must considered is the geographical area you live in. A solid recommendation cannot be made without that information (if you live in CA I would recommend a completely different plant than if you live in MN).
What is true across the board is that you do not want to plant a Bradford Pear or a Paulownia. Both are terrible trees that become messy and hazardous in the future. If you choose one of these trees you are planting a liability.
If you live in the zone 4-6 region, I would recommend these plants:
Large Shade Trees
Zelkova serrata (Japanese Zelkova)
Ulmus parvifolia (Lacebark Elm)
Acer rubrum (Red Oak)
Smaller Flowering/Ornamental Trees
Cornus kousa (Korean Dogwood)
Prunus subhirtella 'Autumnalis' (Flowering Cherry)
Good Luck!

The most popular tree in my subdivision for shade seems to be the Bradford Pear trees. They grow fairly quickly, but need maintenance every once in a while and aren't the longest living tree out there.

Trees that grow fast may also live short lives and are prone to diseases. That is, it's difficult to get a good shade tree to grow quickly without other problems resulting.
Depending on where you live, here are some suggestions:
Shumard Oak
Willow Oak
Lacebark Elm (non-native)
Shatung Maple
Burr Oak
A good shade cover from trees takes years to develop and requires patience.

plant some hardwoods for later, but for fast growth and instant shade, nothing beats a poplar tree. The have a nice shape, cool shade, and the wind going through them makes a very relaxing sound. you'd be amazed how fast they grow!

I agree that Bradford Pears grow quickly. They offer nice shade, have a uniform and appealing shape. But...as they mature, they become susceptible to wind damage. All this being said, when the leaves change in the fall, there is nothing as beautiful!
Best of Luck!

The trees that grow fast are not the ones that you want. Relax, I am 56 and I am planting hedges to make my yard private. You must have much more time than I have. :-)

If you are looking for evergreens. Look at the Thuja Giant. It grows 5-6 feet a year and can get 40' tall. This may not fir your style. But it is the fastest grower that I know,

MAPLE trees are very fast growing trees, but they aren't very strong and they shed the little "helicopters" A tulip tree is pretty quick too and they get VERY tall. Personally I like red-buds... The slowest trees are oaks....but they are very strong.

Pepper Trees, They are evergreen and have yellow flowers. We have them around our house. Shaped like a weeping willow and give lots of shade. I like them cause, when walking in the back yard it looks like some fairy tale.
