Look into HP's or Dell's....they are really good. I would suggest Gateway. We have Gateway's at the college I attend and they SUCK.

I don't know what you plan to use a laptop for, so I can't tell you everything you should look for. The more you plan to use it for the more memory, etc. you should look for with it. If you have a store near you like Computer Hardware or Best Buy, etc. that have sales people that can ask you quetions to help find you the computer that will work best for you that is great. Even if you don't buy it from them, you can use the information you learn there to help buy the laptop you want.

Good luck.

HP. I've had three, only because I've had to upgrade. I've never had a problem, but I know the customer service is great. I tried eMachines, total crap. Dell is overpriced and underbuilt. Honestly, you can get a much better computer for a lot cheaper from HP. Macs are cool, but totally overhyped. Really expensive, better than Dell, but still nothing worth the pricetag. Sony Viaos are supposed to be good. If I was you, I'd get the HP, and if not that, a viao.

As to specs-
It depends on what you want to use it for, but if you're into multimedia, you want at least 512mb of ram if you wanna actually run more than one program. CD burners are great, DVD burners are better. You can totally rip movies, which rocks. Get a good processor, either an intel pentium 4 or an AMD Athlon 64. As for speed, anything over 1.8mhz, over 2 being desired. You'll want a goodish graphics card. You can't go wrong with a good old ATI Radeon. And you'll want plenty of hard drive space to store movies and stuff, I'd reccomend at least 80gigs. Again, it depends on what you want. I personally reccomend a desktop, you get ALOT more bang for your buck. Laptops are great for wireless capabilities, but if you actually want to get one with good specs, plan on spending at least $2000. Not cheap. You can get a comparable, even better desktop for half that price. Again, it all depends on what you want it for, and how you want to use it.

Good luck.

Well ok ....i'll try to be as sincere as possible...
so u want a laptop....how big?
here's my suggestion for a basic configuration....
- 1.5Ghz or over processor speed
- Intel duo or equivalent AMD processor
- 20GB or over Hard drive
- 256 or 512 mb ram
- 14'' or 15.4''(favoured) screen size
- 14'' are lighter...but 15'''s are anywher from 5.5lbs to 7lbs or so
- wireless keyboard/mouse
- Windows xp or Mac OS
- DVD/CD burner
- webcam
- 2 USB ports minimum
- 1 IEEE or firewire port
- in-built wirelesss
- extra ethernet port
- VGA port (sometimes works better to connect to tv)
- s-video port (preferably 4pin, some Dells have 7-pin)
- atleast 2 hours of battery life.
- do not go for extra shiny screen's that MAC and some PCs are offering...they get more outside reflection on them.
- bluetooth capability (but not that important)

Preferred Brands: Dell, Toshiba, Acer, Sony (little expensive)...and my current personal favourite....MAC's.
Acer Ferrari's are good looking too, but expensive.

Good Luck !

Honestly you can't get a VERY high end computer for about 1/3 of the cost of highend computers if you build your own, or have someone build it for you.

seriously look at www.newegg.com with someone who knows how to build computers, you'll be able to build a computer that will still be usable 4-5 years from now for around the price of an average computer you would get from Dell.

Honestly don't waste your money buying computers from any company the same computers you buy from them can typically be built for hundreds less.

The best type of any computer is Alienware but the prices for these machines are insane. You are probably better off with a lower end computer.
go to: http://www.alienware.com/

I would avoid toshiba and dell if you can. Compaq and HP are ok if price is a object to you.
Sony is also top of the line but also expensive.

It depends on what you want to do. If you want something for long trips look at battery life, my VIO only gets about two hours on batter because of the processor speed. Also look at the type of programs you're going to run. If it's just for spreadsheets, and word then you don't need too much. SONY VAIO, and TOSHIBA are the two brands I like the most.

First question, what do you want to use it for? What is the primary purpose and its function?

Generally, Sony and Toshiba are THE best top of the line but they are also obviously the most expensive.

DELL sucks and Apple is proprietary. Once you buy Dell or Apple, you are going to have to stay with Dell or Apple in terms of accesories and upgrades in the future.

Out of these two, apple is still better.

dell or gateway. both good name brand and somewhat decent customer service. look for either intel or AMD chips. now you'd probably want something either pentium 4 2.0 ghz or higher, but that should suit you fine. at least 1gig or RAM, 60gb or bigger hard drive, dvd burner preferably, and your usual USB 2.0 and firewire slots. internal wireless card woul dbe good also.

Acer is pretty good for the money.

Close runners up are Dell and Toshiba.

I'd avoid compaq if at all possible.

Just remember, you get what you pay for.
