Whether you believe the Bible or Evolution (yes I capitalized both to be fair) the two oldest professions are farming and herding(Cain and Able) (also look at The Emergence of Man series). Although hunting may have come first I wouldn't necessarily refer to it as a profession since probably everyone did it at one time and even today it is more of a recreation than a career. Actually for you musicians out there: the Bible states that Musicians are one of the oldest professions along with Metalworkers, Carpenters, Animal Husbantry, Farming and Wine Making.

The old saying goes that prostitution is the oldest profession. It's a joke, not historical fact. Politics came later. Ronald Regan clearly got the joke, as he once said, "Politics is supposed to be the second oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first."

The "profession" that could be _actually_ called the oldest is probably gathering, followed by hunting-gathering.

Prostitution is commonly known as the world's oldest profession and I do not doubt that is is truly ancient. In reality the oldest profession is probably hunting or farming/land cultivation.

Selling deserves the title and I can prove it. Remember the snake in the Garden of Eden?
He had just completed his sales training course at the Devil’s School of Soul Steeling, and Eve was his first prospect.

Fresh out of Selling 101, he pulled out the strongest weapon in his sale’s arsenal: sampling. Yes, the snake temptingly dangled the apple in front of Eve and with one bite she was sold.

You could say the world’s second oldest profession is multi-level marketing, because Eve recruited Adam to eat the apple, but that’s another article.

Anyway, what is the lesson to learn from the world’s first sale’s call? Sampling, sampling, sampling!

When I was in second grade I sold the most chocolate covered almonds in my school with sampling. I bought the first box, rang the doorbell and offered my soon to be client a free sample.

Most of the time I sold a box or two. Why is sampling so powerful, and how can it help you increase restaurant and catering sales?

The first reason is basic: you taste it, you like it and you buy it. Simple.

The law of reciprocation is the second. You do for me and I owe you one. I’m sure a certain percentage of adults felt obligated to purchase a box of chocolate covered almonds since I offered a gift.

If you’re only motive is to guilt people into choosing your restaurant, you won’t get much business.

From car dealers to Sam’s Club, businesses are using the power of sampling to increase their sales. Make sure you put it into your marketing mix. It’s been responsible for booking many a large events for me. It will work for you too.

A surgeon, an engineer, and a lawyer were discussing their professions. Each claimed that he belonged to the world's oldest profession.

The surgeon finally said, "Look, on the sixth day, God took a rib from Adam and created Eve. Therefore, God was the first surgeon."

The engineer retorted, "Yes, but before that, God created the heaven and earth from chaos and confusion. Therefore, God was the first engineer."

The lawyer got a big grin on his face and said, "And just who do you think created the chaos and confusion in the first place?"

I always thought it would be fun to be an escort/call girl, except for the having sex with random strangers part, lol. But getting to get dressed up and go out to fancy restaurants, concerts, the theatre, and so forth with rich guys sounded like fun. My idiot college boyfriend actually tried to get me to become an escort. He didn't believe it was just a cover for prostitution! But I never dabbled in that or pole dancing or any other sex trade.
