what is the best way to get blacks to pick cotton?

i have heard if you tell them that your cotton belongs to a rich farmer that is away for a couple of days, then leave, they will have it all picked for you. anyone else have a better technique?

It was never a question of superior ability in picking cotton, it was the fact that they were cheap labor. In fact, they were unpaid labor. Most slaves were given a place to sleep and food to eat, but they didn't get wages. That was a HUGE factor in putting them in the cotton fields, because picking cotton bolls is intensive, difficult work. Planters simply couldn't afford to pay pickers reasonable wages. The whole system came tumbling down when a mechanical cotton picking machine was invented.
