CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - When school was canceled to accommodate a campaign visit by President Bush, the two 55-year-old teachers reckoned the time was ripe to voice their simmering discontent with the administration's policies.

Christine Nelson showed up at the Cedar Rapids rally with a Kerry-Edwards button pinned on her T-shirt; Alice McCabe clutched a small, paper sign stating "No More War." What could be more American, they thought, than mixing a little dissent with the bunting and buzz of a get-out-the-vote rally headlined by the president?

Their reward: a pair of handcuffs and a strip search at the county jail.

Authorities say they were arrested because they refused to obey reasonable security restrictions, but the women disagree: "Because I had a dissenting opinion, they did what they needed to do to get me out of the way," said Nelson, who teaches history and government at one of this city's middle schools.

Remember many years ago when a lady was handcuffed and had her car impounded because she was driving a bit too fast?

She sued the police. It eventually went to the Supreme Court and they decided the police have the right to do just that.

This was a big blow to individual rights in America. But nobody seemed to notice or even care. Since then, Americans have been losing their rights bit by bit and they just lay down and take it. Is it too late now to try to reclaim what you have lost?

I just read that article today! It's outrageous. It also talked about three people that attended a Bush Town Hall Meeting. They were stopped at the entrance and told that they had been identified and they better not cause any trouble. Then they were asked to leave - when they were not doing anything at all. Later they found out that it was because of a bumper sticker on their car that said something about the Iraq war - something to effect that the price of oil is blood.

I thought we had freedom of speech, but apparently the Bush administration doesn't think the Constitution is a worthy document - and they feel the need to set up "freedom zones" at a distance from their gathering.

What's scary is that they are getting away with this...no one is doing anything about it. I just feel like this is the way it starts...with something small that they can get away with. Then they move on to bigger things...and as long as we continue to let them infringe on our rights they will continue to take them away.

If they voted for Kerry they got what they deserved. Speaking of free speech why don't the Democrats let the Democrat Anti-Abortion group speak at their convention? Whoever runs the campaign decides what they will or will not allow in campaign sponsored events. Even if that means not letting everybody speak. The Democrats have a very well documented history of shutting people up at conventions. In addition to the current anti-abortion trend there was the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago. Things never change whatever the liberals blame conservatives for they (liberals) are always guilty of doing far worse.

no i think that people still have all their rights and freedom to this date but it's the same people that believe there's not enough freedom the ones who are tossing this freedom away..ya it's not the government's concern if someone doesn't feel that there's enough freedom because there's if not i don't think anyone would be able to respond freely to any of the questions posted on this website i don't think we would be allowed to do anything we wanted and that's as far as i know not happened yet.. i think people brag too much about the government not respecting the individual's freedom but i don't think government's got that problem in perspective the government's concern is the war that's been going on accross the world ya..it's concern is some other people not the citizens that live in this country.. so we have to stick to respecting that idea or realize that it's not just about freedom but respect for one another..maybe if we see it this way we wouldn't get in too many conflicts don't you think it would help out society in a good way? but no we brag about not having enough freedom instead..

I believe Americans rights have been infringed upon since the 2000 elections, which I still believe were corrupt. Our current president seems to find a way to do what he wants regardless of the American citizen's rights or the laws this country has in place. And I am from Texas.

Without a doubt! Our government is more concerned with funding their own pockets then running the country. Its so sad the the rights people died for are being tossed out because it does not fit the current government policies. IE they can't get rich off of them and that's the bottom line $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

and exactly what freedoms do you think you were born with? and what freedoms that you were born with do you feel you have lost? and how will those freedoms that you think you lost help when faced with a plane flying into the building you are standing in? do you have any concept of how you obtained the freedom you were born with? If everyone during ww 2 was like these teachers you seem to cherish you would be typing in German. that is if you are white and blond haired like me. get the point. stop thinking you lost something that was not really yours to begin with and start helping the very people who wake up and protect your freedoms by standing behind them rather then undermining them.

What freedom? Freedom is just something that they tell us like a bedtime story. In reality it is just a way to keep us from overthrowing the president and making everything right

the first time I saw this I thought it was just a paranoid rant but then I started to wonder, and found similar material all over the web. Some of it on very serious sites.

Yes. It's all to make way for the New World Order. No one really believes in it though but as always they will be overwhelmed because they didn't believe and now it's way to late.
