Thats a tough one. Many moms and people from more traditional cultures have the mistaken belief that girls who have not had sex should not/cannot use tampons if they are virgins. This goes along with the old fashioned view of an intact hymen, which most girls DO NOT have these days due to school sports, aerobics, etc. If you are more comfortable using them, perhaps find some literature on them first to show your mom. If nothing else, show her this post. Tampons are more hygenic and cause less odor, so many women prefer them. You do not have to be sexually active to use them, and they will not hurt you in any way. Using them has nothing to do with "growing up too fast".

Tell her that pads are bothering you and you want to try something new. She will understand. some people use tampons when they first got there period so that doesn't mean that you are growing up fast. It isn't like you are asking for birth control.

Just put the box with the pads where She will see it and let her ask you about it. Then you can tell her. Let her approach you. Thats what I did after a friend at school gave me a few when I realized I needed a pad and didnt have one available. And I never had a line break yet. You can wear them for swimming in your bikini. It just take some getting used to at first to put them in.

As a mother of a pre-teen, I know first hand that as a woman, a tampon is a necessity. It allows you the freedom to change clothing in public (gym class), wear your regular wardrobe and swim among many other things. I would come up with a list of why it is important to you to convert to the tampon (i.e. so you can carry them in your pocket) and remind mom that she was in your shoes and she can appreciate the simplicity of the tampon. I can recall having to dispose of them at a friends house (pads) and I was emberrassed because they did not know I was even on my period yet...a tampon can flush! Good Luck!

Be honest. Tell her you got a sample and prefer them. Chances are she'll understand. Don't you know what your Mom uses? Surely she's got tampons in her bathroom too?
