That is an easy one. First buy a decent car, then MAINTENANCE...oil changes, air filter, fuel filter, other fluids, ect...find out dealer recommended milage to change each and do it. I have a car with 271,000 miles on it and still going and that is what I do!

You really need to change the oil, so everything in the engine runs smootly. You also want to keep the air filter maintained just so your car isn't choking itself. You also might want to get a new battery, and maybe even new wires to the car from the battery just to make sure. But other than that...all I can say is you should most likely check with you car's automotive dealer and ask the what's the best for the car YOU have, not just any car. Each car is different, some cars you can put a heavy oil into...others, need a fine oil to keep them running well. But just talking to your dealer about your specific car model and type...will help you alot, and will probably save you a good amount of money in the long run. I hope I helped!

If there is only one thing you do to your car that would be change the oil and oil filter every 3000-5000 Km This is the best medicine for your car. Check and maintain your levels of engine oil, transmission fluid, engine coolant, brake fluid, and power steering fluid. Also change your Transmission Fluid and filter after every 80,000kms. Also if you could have your car oiled every fall and the salt washed off every spring, The body will last much longer. Happy motoring.

you'll never be able to keep it from breaking down but to keep it running smoothly, change the oil and tune up regularly, keep fluid levels where they need to be and don't drive it if its over heating and don't ever use water without anti freeze in the radiator or cuz ur cooling system will rust and you'll end up replacing the whole cooling system. And don't be afraid to accelerate at high speeds, thats what the engine was made for. ,

#1 : buy a decent car (not expensive, just mechanically sound)
#2 : maintain it. (hint: 3000 mile oil changes won't hurt but are excessive in almost all cases.
#3 : build-up and keep a break-down emergency fund of at least $1000.00. (NOTHING will keep a car from breaking down -- it's a machine and they just break. Having a cash reserve will take the sting out of all but the most major of mechanical failures)

a person can do all the preventative maintenance in the world and still any car, doesn't matter what car, it will/may break down some day or another. i have worked on foreign and domestic for 14 years.
i have seen the person who doesn't take care of a car and the person who has.
of course the person who doesn't is in more often when he/she can afford it, but the person who does, still gets their car towed in and sometimes it drives in.
but good luck anyways.

The first thing you do is proper maintenance. You give it good service, it will give good service back to you. Periodic checks of the vehicle by a reputable mechanic can usually find trouble before it does break down. Remember, it does wear, and with wear, parts wear out.

Drive smooth, change the oild at least every 5000 miles (depending on how much usage. Keep all the fluid levels at the correct levels, keep tire pressure at the value rating on the tires, rotate the tires when they need it - if you see tread depth differences or it starts wearing early, find a mechanic who has good references from people you trust (in their automobile knowledge) for any needed service/checkups, and whatever you do, DON"T LET MY DAUGHTER DRIVE IT! peace.
