I have been a server for over 20 years ans I would have to say older people, teenagers and I hate to say it this way but Black people. They all expect great service and will run you crazy but won't tip accordingly.

I wait tables at a Japanese restaurant in the Tampa, FL area. Most of our guests tip very well. Unfortunately, between Nov. and Feb. that isn't the case. We have a large influx of people, mostly seniors and Canadians. The seniors usually aren't eating sushi, so it takes a few moments to explain the menu to them. But once they've ordered, they don't usually require any "extra" service. The Canadians are a different story... They speak English to me, then French among themselves ABOUT me... As I understand French, it's pretty insulting. And it's happened more than once. After explaining the menu, I get to answer why we don't serve French wine, "just" California. When their food comes, and has been served, there's usually something wrong with it, or it wasn't what they thought it was. Then, after they've occupied the table for an hour or more after they finish dinner, the pay their bill and leave no tip. I've been waiting tables for a long time, and had never really seen a difference in tipping due to age, gender, or anything like that. But when I moved to Tampa, that changed. I'm sure that not all Canadians are like that, at least I hope not...

Ya know, I'm a server and I REALLY try to keep an open mind. I try not to prejudge because once I do that table ends up surprising me with a huge tip.

A lot of people say black people are bad tippers. I know that's a horrible stereotype, but I suppose it's based upon their experiences. I, however, do well with black people and don't see any difference. Old people can leave an okay tip most of the time from my experience.

I would say the biggest disappointment is waiting on a group of women or MOTHERS (for a girls' night out I suppose). I usually don't have much luck with them. Also, high school kids and a lot of college kids. I guess money's tight at that time in your life, but let's try to come prepared!

Not to say that all women are bad tippers, because some women tip very well. But I get stiffed by many more women than I do men. Older ladies, usually 65+, usually leave small tips, but they are really easy to wait on because they usually don't require too much work. So I don't mind the small tips from them; they work me the least.

As far as religion goes...the more religious they are for the most part, the worse a tip you'll get. Anytime I work on a Sunday, I usually request the smoking section or the bar if I want to make any money. You'd think they'd tip a lot, just coming from church and all...Not all are like that; there are some very nice ones, but the demanding ones make me hate working on Sundays.

As far as status goes, it's about equal for all. I always get surprised by both rich and poor alike.

i think it depends on the service and the income, the type of eatery, alot of things.. some people just don't have it some don't know there is a % that is customary..some don't care and have the attitude that the server is working and the restaurant should be paying them..
people on fixed incomes that get to go out a few times a month don't have extra so if they leave something it is what they could leave..all this comes from being a waitress and owning a restaurant..
i have heard women tip better because they have been in the same job before and know how it is,on the other hand some women think i don't make much and u are doing your job so why should i pay you /some think men tip women better depending on what they look like...
i think it depends on the service and i tip accordingly
not sure if i answered but i gave u some thing to think about..

I find the worse tippers are generally the old people cause back in the day a dollar tip was like a huge tip. some kids aren't that good of tippers either. Sometimes people suprise ya.

It is difficult to make generalities. A tip is a way of saying thank you for good service. I usually give 15%; Better service gets more sucky service may, or may not, get less than 15%, it depends. Mostly I think tipping is a frame of mind and sometimes it has to do with how deep your pockets are. I also think life is full of surprises. That person or group of people you think won't tip well will make your night. An open mind and positive attitude will carry you through any situation.

Younger people (high school age) and seniors in general, but every once and a while one of these people will surprise you and leave a great tip. There is no race or gender, it just depends on how good you serve them and maybe their income level. Middle class tend to leave the best tips.

I noticed that many Asians don't tip, but its not because they are cheap. In their culture they don't tip at all, and if they do it is considered an insult of sorts.

Stats say that smokers are generally the best tippers, but that's because they have money to burn so to speak.

People in Indiana as a whole..I'm visiting here and I'm amazed at what I see some people leave as a tip...I'm from Scottsdale and I'm old and a woman and I always tip 20% at least..so you never know ,many years ago I worked one summer at a restaurant in a country club and that taught me to always tip the servers. Its hard work and it doesn't pay a good base salary
