There are many 'styles" or 'disaplines' of dance: a) traditional ballroom incompasses all of the 'social' forms of dance - waltz, tango, jitter-bud, two-step, etc.; b) ballet; c) modern [a la Graham, Cunningham, etc.]; c) Tap; d) JAZZ (see below); e) Afro-Cuban [sometimes referred to as 'Ethnic' ]; f) interpretive [i.e., do what the music tells you to do]; etc.
JAZZ is a dance form that is formaly taught. Look in the yellow pages under Dance Classes. Studios abound in New York, Los Angeled, Chicago and many other 'major markets.' You can call and ask to "audit' (just watch) a class to get a feel for it (it should be a nominal cost).
If you're not in or near a 'major market,' DO NOT go to the Local "Dolly DInkle School of Dance & Batton Twirling." Go on the web and search for:
"Jazz Dancing Video Tape instruction" - you'll get an incredable number of valid and helpful sources. Net Flix also has them.
You may want to get the Video of "All that Jazz" - a fictionalized bio pic of Bob Fosse and/or "A Chorus Line," both of which blend Jazz with Ballet.
If you are in or near New York, Luigi's is generally considered the best of the Jazz studios.
There are several levels of dance instruction: children, young adult, Adult, and Professional (you really want to dance as a career). Start at 'Beginner' and then see where it takes you. If it's something you like and want to pursue, I recommend (and your Jazz instructor shoud too) that you also start taking beginner ballet.

Amy, you are absolutely crazy...Jazz music is a type of music began by African Americans in the early 1900's. The beat is upbeat and the dances usually require a more flamboyant style. It actually uses ballet techniques! So, master the ballet techniques and jazz it up a bit and you have this style of dance!
