Heterosexuals that want to forbid gays from marrying think that legal recognition of homosexuality is an endorsement of a mental illness and unhealthy behavior. Studies have shown that human beings are born with a natural tendency to care more for people who are more like themselves. Religions reinforce this natural tendency by teaching heterosexuals that homosexuality is not natural, even though people can "tell" when a person is gay by the way they talk, walk, act, their interests, etc., which of course is not learned, but born. The brainwashing use of the Bible reinforces these ideas in the predominantly lesser minds of the fundamentalist religious groups. Fortunately, as society evolves, so does the level of intelligence, and just as dark-skinned people are not assumed to be animals, and women are not considered property of their husbands, as the Bible claims, humanity will come to mostly widely accept that homosexuals are just different, but natural, and that the treatment they have received throughout history in the name of God, will be another black spot in the story of mankind.

Also, marriage, in the legal sense, has nothing to do with religion, God, children, or any of the other nonsense that the Fascist Religious Right try to argue. Atheists can get married and have no children. Marriage is a legal association of two people, the gender of the people should make no difference. Church officials already can refuse to marry anyone they don't approve of, and can continue to do so, but government recognition of marriage doesn't require any religious involvement. Not allowing a loving adult couple (not porch swings, not animals, not children, etc.) of the same gender to have access to the many benefits of marriage that the government bestows, is unfair discrimination.

It actually depends on who you talk to. A lot of people (including myself) believe it is wrong...not because we are "homophobic" as someone else posted...but because it goes against what we believe (religious or otherwise). There is a difference. I have gay friends. Yes, I can be their friend, but no, I don't agree with their lifestyle either and they know it. So, no...not everyone agrees with it but that doesn't make a person "homophobic"...just different beliefs. I don't call gay people "heterophobics", so why should it be the other way around? It's stupid.
Most Bible believing Christians base these beliefs off of several Bible passages. They are found in Deuteronomy,Acts, Romans, etc. There is also the story of Sodom & Gommorah in the Bible. All state how God thinks homosexuality is an abomination. Plus, there is the pre-stated fact that God didn't join in marital union two men or two women. He didn't make the bodies of two women or two men capable of joining and producing children either. In Song of Solomon, He makes it plain how beautiful he thinks the union of a man and woman is in marriage.
Other religions have similar beliefs...so there is your answer.

It really depends on the persons beliefs and sometimes we have to find what we think the "biggest sin of them all" is. People believe in the Bible and think gay marriage/homosexuality is wrong yet we sometimes forget that coveting, adultrey, lying, etc is wrong too. Sin is sin, God doesn't say oh, you can come to Heaven because you told a "white lie" but you can't because you are gay. It's crazy. I personally don't believe in gay marriage but what people choose to do is there business. I feel if you love someone/something enough to sacrifice many things, even eternal life, then do your thing. I can't judge you or anyone else, just pray for people and myself!

People are scared by things they don't understand. When you've been raised your whole life to believe in one thing, you don't want to consider that you've been wrong. There are a lot of close-minded people out there. You can talk all you want and they won't admit they're wrong. You just have to believe in what you believe and not care about other people. They'll never pass that amendment to ban gay marriage. If that happens, I'm moving out of the US. I may not be gay, but I think that it's disgraceful to try and tell people how to live their lives.

What is the point of getting married (officially with a certificate)? In the times of the bible people would get married in order to (and sorry for being so blunt) be able to sleep together since it was forbidden outside of marriage ...now, if you are already in an intimate relationship with someone, technically you don't really need to get married... Homosexuality is against the bible as is premarital sex...if you follow one, why shouldn't you follow the other....sorry aboutthe incoherency of my answer but whoever gets it gets it).

Marriage is a commitment that a man and a woman makes before God that has been accepted in this country as long as it's been a Christian based country. Next thing you know old men will want to marry their porch swing.

I agree with you 100%. But, some people are just very religious or homophobic about the issues. It's horrible for people that are homosexual and trying to marry someone of the same sex. It's always going to be an argument with people, there's nothing you can do.

They think it's wrong because they have to have something to be upset about. Right now gay marriage is the "hate-flavor-of-the-month" A few decades ago it was interracial marriage. Give it awhile something else will be the "hate-flavor-of-the-month".
