My 11 year old daughter is asking for me to let her go with her friends to the mall and movies without parents. I trust her and she is really mature but I'm not sure. I've asked her friend's moms and most of them think she's mature enough. What do you think is an appropiate age?

Well it mostly depends on where you live. I live in a borough of NY so my parents didn't let me go to the movies by myself until I was about 12. I wasn't allowed to go to the mall by myself until this year. Maturity is a big thing too, I was very mature but my mom was afraid of the other sick people in this world. When I started going to the movies by myself I actually got my first cellphone. Just this past weekend since I have been going to the mall so much my mom got me my first credit-card.

Anyway, if you know where you live is safe then i would say let her go to the movies because at least you know she will be in one spot. The mall I think she is a a few years too young to go by herself. Shes walking around alot where someone could be following her, and theres a big chance of her losing money.

But this is your call your the parent. Hope this helps.

Don't take this the wrong way but I don't know too many mature 11 year olds. I have had plenty of experience around 11-15 year olds during my student teaching and none of them are all that mature. I think it is an individual to individual situation and you have to have that trust in place as you stated.
I just don't know that an 11 year old could handle serious situations if they happened.
Try letting her go during the day to practice her newfound independence. I don't think there is a magic age. I was 14.

I wouldn't be able to say a specific age- it depends on the particular child. Trust your gut. Do you think she is ready? What if she goes to the mall with her friends but you are there- just shopping in a nearby store. You could meet up with her after an hour or two. That way it would increase your confidence (and hers) for the next time.

Don't forget to "practice" with her strategies in case she gets uncomfortable about something when you are not there.

Best wishes!

I started at 10 but I was VERY mature and I went w/very responsible friends who my parents approved of! rules were
1.I had an 11 o'clock curfew
2.I HAD to bring my cell
3.my mom and dad had to kno who I was going to be with, what time the movie started, what movie we were seeing ect.
4.I had to tell her who was picking us up at what time and what place!

a little too young I'd say. Wait till shes 13 or so, a mall is a big place with LOTS of people. Maybe you could just go and trail behind them, but not follow them into any stores, just watch them.
Good luck!

Its not a matter of age as it is responsibility. Just makes sure to have extra precautions for any thing that might go wrong. And make sure the person she rides with is someone you can trust.

I think the appropriate age is old enough to drive yourself there. So many perverts and stalkers are out there. They always have abducted children on cameras at the mall or a store somewhere on the news.

it all depends who she is with, i am a 15 year old girl and i have been going to the movies with just my friends since i was like 11. The first time i went to the movies with just my friends i was alone with my friend brandon, in the 7th grade, then with my friend justin in the 8th grade then with a group of like 5-6 of assorted boys and girls, my closest friends and we just goofed off. Just make sur eyou know who she is with, because my mom doenst like one of my best friends who i really like and when he asked me to the movies i told my mom i was going with him and like 3 other people, but it was really just me him, and another one of my friends and his gf
