Because Hezbollah, a terrorist group in Lebanon, kidnapped an Israeli soldier. Israel is trying to save him and destroy the terrorist group. Hezbollah is fighting back and this whole thing is getting ugly.
And technically, Israel isn't at war with Lebanon. Only Hezbollah.

Adam's right. On the surface, it's because Hezbollah kidnapped Israeli soldiers.
But another answer is that they're at war because Israel (and their closest ally, the U.S.) did not support the Hamas moderate, Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh, who was willing to acknowledge Israel's right to exist. Militants, led by politburo chief Khaled Meshal, did an end-run around Haniyeh, successfully provoking Israel, scuttling Haniyeh's peace initiative. Rather than ignoring Meshal's crime and supporting Haniyeh's brave act of reaching out, Israel struck back militarily, just as the militant Meshal wanted. One of the most promising peace initiatives in a long time went down the tubes.
